“Chatbot” and “AI agent” are often used as if they meant the same thing. They don’t, and they do not deliver the same value to a business. Here is the difference in plain words, and how to tell which one fits your company.
The classic chatbot: answers written in advance
A classic chatbot follows a pre-written script: buttons, closed questions, fixed answers. It works well for very repetitive requests such as opening hours, your address or tracking an order from a reference number.
Its limit shows as soon as the customer leaves the script. A question phrased differently, a message in Darija or an unexpected request, and the chatbot hands over to a human or goes round in circles.
The AI agent: it understands, decides and acts
An AI agent runs on an artificial intelligence model that understands free-form messages in French, Arabic or English. Above all, it can act: check your catalogue, look up stock, record an order, create a lead in your CRM or book an appointment.
It works from your own data (products, prices, procedures) and hands the conversation to a team member when the situation calls for it.
The differences at a glance
- Understanding: a chatbot spots keywords; an AI agent understands full sentences and context.
- Languages: a chatbot follows the languages it was scripted for; an AI agent switches naturally between French and Arabic.
- Actions: a chatbot answers; an AI agent carries out tasks in your tools.
- Improvement: a chatbot is edited script by script; an AI agent improves as you enrich its documents and rules.
When a chatbot is enough
If you receive few messages and the questions never change, a simple chatbot or WhatsApp Business quick replies may be all you need.
When to move to an AI agent
- You receive dozens of messages a day on WhatsApp, Facebook or your website.
- Customers ask varied questions about your products, prices or lead times.
- You want to record orders or qualify leads without retyping.
- You want to reply in the evening and at weekends without tying up a team.
Good to know: an AI agent does not replace your team. It handles simple, repetitive requests and leaves the cases that need judgement or a personal touch to your staff.
How to get started
- Pick one precise first use: customer service, order taking or lead qualification.
- Gather what the agent needs: catalogue, prices, FAQ, procedures.
- Set the rules: what the agent may do alone and when it hands over.
- Test on one channel, measure, then expand.
